Reaching for new work nationwide
In late 2007, we received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to launch a series of workshops and commissions geared around our mission statement. Over the last year, we created a series of residency opportunities for nationally-renowned artists to come to ATC and have focused time to work on new plays with our award-winning Ensemble. Our workshops and commissions are all focused on developing strong relationships with the playwrights that last long after our first collaboration. The current residencies include:

  • Tony and Pulitzer nominee Craig Lucas's Invisible Things, a three part play on alcoholism, dating, marriage, and divorce;
  • An American adaptation of the Chinese tale Journey to the West by Cirque du Soleil head conductor Richard Oberacker and Disney Theatricals concertmaster Rob Taylor;
  • An urban American updating of Lorca's Blood Wedding, by director Jaime Castañeda and writer Kris Dias.
  • Joe Sutton, Catherine Filloux, and Tyrell McCranny's The Breach, exploring the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina on three families scattered across New Orleans.
  • Identity and internet-based relationships are explored in Sex with Strangers by Laura Eason, Former Artistic Director and Ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre Company.
