Michael Thomas Newberry, Executive Director

Michael Thomas Newberry (Executive Director) came to American Theater Company in 2008. In this last year, he redefined the Theater's marketing and fundraising strategies, and oversaw a 40% increase in operating revenue. Prior to ATC, Michael served as Deputy Director at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, recipient of the 2008 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. During his tenure, Michael managed artist contracting and union relations, led the development of a new website and e-communications strategy, and produced international presentations of work by Peter Brook, James Thiérrée, Carlo Colla e Figli, The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Farber Foundry, and The Chekhov International Theatre Festival, among others. He has worked with Teach For America as both a public school teacher and as Development Director for the Arizona region, and as Managing Director for Future Tenant, a laboratory space for emerging visual, literary and performance artists in Pittsburgh. Michael holds a master's degree in arts management from Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a recipient of Theatre Communications Group's New Generations, Future Leaders award, has served on grants review panels for the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and sits on the Advisory Board of Farmers Alley Theatre.
